Stranded or Claustrophobic?

Jayelle Ravenshade

I had read The Resort by Goodwin last year and it was okay-ish so I almost skipped past this one. I am so happy I didn't.

I've read horror and psychological thrillers since I was able to read (I was only 10 when I read my first Stephen King book). So, to say not much scares me or shocks me anymore is an understatement.

Stranded is the story of a Maddy who signs up to spend a year with other participants on a deserted island. After some tragic life events she feels she needs to get away, start fresh and maybe grow up a little bit and sees this as the perfect opportunity to do all of those things. If it were me? I probably would have opted for a haircut and new sofa. Roughing it in the woods for a year with strangers and no indoor plumbing, not my thing. That was the first uncomfy plot line in the story for me.

The story progresses quickly enough and soon, the other islanders are hunting Maddy. You get a mob mentality where they have ostracized her and are now blaming her for things she couldn't possibly have done or for their own mistakes. Here is where all hell breaks loose.

The rest of the story is Maddy's fight for survival from not only the elements but the other islanders. She spends a great deal of her time hiding in secret places and in fear of death and the islanders. This is what got me... it's a very claustrophobic story. The enclosure in hiding spaces and the feel of constantly being chased by others... no thanks.

This is not a gory horror story. It gives you the feeling of being chased and fear of something lurking around every corner.

This is a book that will most certainly find it's way into my dreams or well, maybe my nightmares.

5 🌮's. This is a devour-able book that you won't be able to put down.
