Thank you to the author, Kayla Martell, for a copy of The Minor Fall. This is a minimal spoilers review.
The Minor Fall follows Rowan (Roe) as she navigates the loss of her sister, a new romance with someone she least expected, and a journey into a fantasy land that comes with it's own unique challenges.
The story is set in Ireland and the fictional, Ruhaven. People appear in the Ledger and can then enter Ruhaven to experience their past life. Roe finds that she is the first twin to be in the Ledger, and she spends a good portion trying to determine what that exactly means.
Bryn, the male main character, was previously exiled from the group/Ruhaven before being recruited by Roe to rejoin and help her learn more about what happened to her sister and why her name is in the Ledger.
This is a slow burn book with Roe and Bryn taking time to find their way. It's not a straightforward enemies to lovers, more of an annoyed FMC and patient MMC storyline.
The Minor Fall is also a high fantasy book and it took me a while to follow all of the elements and intricacies that make Ruhaven what it is. There is a great deal of world-building and at 628 pages, this is a lengthy book.
I found the characters to be enjoyable, although, Roe was really hard on Bryn more times than I could count. She eventually came around though and their chemistry is well-written. The pacing of the story is a bit slow, with multiple chapters dedicated to the back and forth in Ruhaven. The last 20% of the book moves quickly though and the pieces come together quickly at the end.
The book ends on a fairly large cliffhanger and is the prequel in a series. However, I do think you could read it as a standalone and enjoy the ending as a happy ending between the two main characters.
The Minor Fall is a unique story and premise and I enjoyed the fact that the main characters weren't perfect. Overall, its a 2 for spice for me and a 4.5 taco rating (only because of the pacing).
