*ARC Review. Thank you to J.R. Dust for a copy of Famine in exchange for an honest review. Here are my thoughts

Famine is a new romantasy novel that follows Lora, a human, that is left with no other option but to travel to the magik realm. In this universe, humans are impoverished and live separately from the magik beings. If they pass The Testing, they can choose to go over to the magik realm, and if chosen by a magik being, they remain on the other side while their human family receives a salary.
Lora is part of the resistance and is sent over to the magik realm. Her family says their goodbyes and look forward to the allowance that they'll receive. Upon arriving on the other side, Lora discovers that they've been lied to and that the magik beings are grotesque monsters and give humans no choice to return to their human realm. Left with no options, Lora decides to go with Dellon, a magik beast that was on a list of beings to avoid given to her by the resistance.
Upon arriving at Dellon's home, she is left in the care of her guard, Ghurson. Lora quickly discovers that Ghurson is a higher being and not at all like the other magiks. Since this is a romantasy, I'll let you fill in the blanks on what happens there. 😏
This was a fun read and while there were a few things left unexplained, this is only book one in the series so I suspect we'll get more details later. I found Lora to be a decent main character. Her inner monologue wasn't immature or annoying as some can be when they are younger main characters (Lora is 22). She made reasonable decisions and she acted responsibly and fairly in her dealings with other magik beings. The story is also told from Ghurson's point of view and he's likable as well. He's one of the four horsemen and you get a bit of his backstory in this book as well.
I'm giving this a bit higher spice rating as well because there was quite a bit of detail in the 🌶️ scenes. Reader beware and read your trigger warnings.
The book comes out soon and I look forward to reading the next book in the series from this author.
