ARC Review
I received A Crown of Slumber as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Here are my thoughts...
I'm usually hesitant of fairy tale retellings because I feel like either 1) it's basically the same thing as the original story or 2) it's been done over and over again and I'm bored with the storyline. The synopsis sounded intriguing for A Crown of Slumber however, so I signed up for the ARC. (I'm kind of sucker for anything Fae).
Let me preface this with, Sleeping Beauty is not my favorite fairy tale. I can handle grim and dark. I write grim and dark stories. But, Sleeping Beauty is a rape story disguised as a children's story. Eek. I'm not a prude, I read spice but the original story is just bleh for me.
However, I enjoyed the fresh take on this story. There's definitely spice but it's all between consenting adults. (Thank you very much R.L. Perez!) Both the FMC and MMC are likable characters, they have their faults for sure but nothing that makes you resent them or spend half of the story irritated with them. Their banter was enjoyable and not cringey or cliche.
There are a few twists that unravel towards the end and brought the story together well. Also, there are dragons. Who doesn't love dragons? 🖤
I gave this 4 🌮's on my Book Taco rating scale. The beginning was a little slow but other than that, it picked up at the second half and left me thinking about it after I finished it.
