A Creepy Haunted House Story for Halloween

Jayelle Ravenshade

The September House has been on my TBR list for a while. I've been on a waitlist for months with my library to get my hands on a copy so when I discovered that it was available on Spotify Premium, I dropped my hold and listened to the audiobook (and then immediately used my freed up hold spot for another creepy crawly book!).

The September House follows Margaret as she navigates the spirits that invade her home every September. Margaret and Hal, married for many, many years moved into their dream home after renting their entire lives and Margaret would do anything to stay in her home, ghosts and all! When Hal goes missing, their daughter Catherine, becomes suspicious and shows up to help Margaret solve the mystery. Catherine, unable to see the ghosts (the ghosts that Margaret calls 'pranksters'), begins to think her mother is losing her marbles.

This story takes you through several weeks in September as Catherine and Margaret attempt to solve the mystery of Hal's disappearance while Margaret desperately tries to hide all the prankster's shenanigans from Catherine. Moving furniture to blood dripping down the walls to buried bones. This story covers the basics of a haunted house story.

While this isn't a scary haunted house story, this is what I had wanted 'How to Sell a Haunted House' by Grady Hendrix to be. (I was thoroughly disappointed by Hendrix' 'haunted house' story) Margaret is lovable and Catherine isn't. The pranksters are weird, mischievous, and entertaining. The walls flowing with blood and the backstory of Margaret and Hal's relationship sprinkled into the chapters keeps you wondering what's going to happen next and just what happened in the past.

If you want to pick up a copy of this for Halloween, your best bet is to purchase a copy or listen on Spotify Premium. You'll face a waitlist through your local library for good reason!
